Chic to Shabby: Chicago Date Idea

When looking for love, you strive to find someone versatile, adaptable and flexible. On one hand, people want someone cultured, sophisticated and well mannered. But on the other hand, they want someone who can kick back, eat a hot dog and drink a beer. So show off your versatility by taking that crush of yours out on this two component date!

Back in February I suggested some romantic dinner ideas for Valentine’s Day. Well I finally got to check out one of the mentioned “AOL’s Top Ten Voted Romantic Chicago Date Spot” with a very lovely couple and my better half. I am pleased to introduce to you Roscoe Village’s charming little bungalow, Volo Restaurant and Wine Bar.

You can find this vintage wine bar tucked away on bustling West Roscoe Street. And although it was cold and rainy, I couldn’t help but fantasize about the enchanting out door patio in the back. Summer are you here yet? I snagged some pics off their website for you to see. Love the cabanas.

Volo’s gourmet food is intricately prepared and the wine list is fabulous! But before I begin on our little adventure, I must warn you picky people to check out the menu beforehand. You might be better off coming here for just some flirting and vino.

After we were seated and I ooohed over the candle lighting and lovely centerpiece…

I decided to go with a bubbly flight. After all…it was Friday.

Of course every glass was enjoyed to its fullest. Now luckily for you, there were four of us and their menu consists of small plates. Which means I have lots of food eye candy to share.

Roasted Beets
Deliciously fresh and the goat cheese perfectly complimented.
Sweet Pea Flatbread
Pleasantly, surprisingly tasty.
Sausage Roll
 Beautiful presentation.
Steamed Black Mussels
By far the best thing we ordered!
Fritter
Basically a shrimp stuck in a hush puppy.
And of course dessert!
The Profiterole Trio. Mmmm mmm good.
After finishing my champagne flight and satisfying meal, we decided to counter balance the fanciness of Volo with a hole in the wall right down the street. Four Moon Tavern. I suggest you do the same.
And oh what a beer selection! Simply divine. Especially the IPA.
Did I mention this is a hole in the wall? Gotta love the decor.

Unfortunately, two of the picky people I was with did not have the luxury of this now available post and was not forewarned to check out Volo’s menu beforehand. So we ordered a basket of french fries, which happens to be their specialty.

And I quickly learned why. Although stuffed, I simply could not resist. I mean seriously, who can turn down french fries right in front of your face? Not I! Piping hot and crispy, I would say it was right up there with the black steamed mussels. A perfect ending, to a perfect night.
So whether it be the Lobster and Steak or Old Style and Peanuts, you always need some balance in your life. I hope Volo and Four Moons shows you exactly this.
