When moving from the City to the suburbs I found it hard and awkward in our new social setting. In addition to the move, I felt like the only woman without kids, which added to the difficulty of connecting with others in our new town. Anyone else experience these feelings?
It seemed that adult plans usually revolve around play groups and kid activities. And conversations usually started with… ‘how many kids do you have?’, ‘where do they go to school?’ , etc. Since I have yet to experience these things, I can’t really weigh in on these common topics. I tended to feel out of place and like I shouldn’t be there. I know it’s all in my head!
Luckily, so many of my mama friends, have gone waaaaaaay out of their way to include me. And to be clear, I LOVE hanging out with moms (almost all my BFFs are mamas!); I adore children (I’m secretly a 5 year old trapped inside an adult body)
Given my love for clothes, I fell upon a fantastic ice breaker that initiates conversation with strangers and keeps the convo flowing. This works WONDERS for ANY social or work setting – especially when you don’t know anyone!
My advice? Wear a statement piece! First impressions are everything and this really grabs people’s attention (in a good way!).
This pink tweed jacket is a perfect example of something I’d pop on for a fun party or lunch. The bright color makes you stand out big time! I’ll usually get a complete stranger say, “I love your jacket! Where’d you get that?”. This breaks the ice immediately and helps me feel comfortable asking questions back. It’s awkward trying to chat with strangers (let alone a group of people). And when the kid topic comes up, I already feel relaxed and confident. It’s a slight shift that makes a world of difference.
My tweed blazer just became available TODAY and easily my favorite piece I own right now. It will sell out ASAP (just like their Aprés Ski sweater did). So HURRY. It’s a total confidence booster and be sure to size down.
Have you ever felt like ‘the only one’ before? Maybe you’re the ONLY one of your friends who isn’t married. Or the only one WITH kids. Or the only one who didn’t go to college. I’m so sorry if you feel alone. I hope this advice helps you the next time you’re feeling uncomfortable at a party!
P.S. Statement earrings, a bold lipstick or a bottle of champagne works like a charm too!
Love you guys! And a very special thank you to all my mama girlfriends who have gone above and beyond including me! It has not gone unnoticed and something I will never forget. XOXO
P.S. How to make your legs look slimmer and how to have an effortless morning.
