How To Shop Produce Like A French Woman

There’s nothing more French than a crochet bag at the Farmer’s Market!

The French have this effortless way about them don’t you think? So I love incorporating small elements of their lifestyle into my own.

I usually take Larry {our pup!} and sneak him nibbles of my doughnut as we stroll the fruit and veggie stands. It’s the best way to support your community, get the freshest tasting produce, be healthy and pretend you live in France.

Scroll down to get my TOP TIPS for shopping the market just like a Parisian….no matter where you live.

The Crochet Bag

Inspired by the traditional French net grocery tote, this crochet bag makes your shopping experience effortless – just like the French. It’s light, breathable, durable and expands! It’s shocking how much you can fit in it too. I got mine for $9 on Amazon and LOVE this one and this one.

Don’t Buy From the First Stand You See

The stands right by the entrance are typically the most expensive! So make it a habit to do a lap and take note of pricing before buying. You’ll get the same exact produce for less!

Always Shop In Season

Pretty much anything at the farmer’s market is in season. But I always refer to this handy dandy chart to ensure I get the tastiest morsels I possibly can. If you live in another area, just Google what’s in season for your location. Then fill that crochet bag full of produce!

Shop Right Before Closing

Farmers typically drop their prices at the end of the day to ensure they sell out. But be careful! You also run the risk that what you want is sold out.

My Favorite Chicago Farmer’s Markets

Since so many of my readers live in the Chicagoland area, these are the best in the area and100% worth the travel.

  • The French Market in Wheaton {you feel like you’re in Paris for a minute. Don’t forget your crochet bag!}
  • Green City Market in Lincoln Park {get a coffee at Elaine’s and snag a donut at Donut Vault’s Truck first}
  • Lake Bluff {feels like you’re in the East Coast}
  • Hinsdale {I haven’t been but I hear it’s awesome and plan to go this summer}
  • Elawa Farm in Lake Forrest {this place is UNREAL and they even have a mini zoo. Built in fun for kids during and after.}
  • La Grange {make a pit stop at Owl & Lark for a smoothie bowl and avocado toast}
  • And when all else fails, the closest is always best. {Our farmer’s market in Elmhurst is pretty sub par. But you can’t beat the fact that I can walk there and it’s in my hometown}

What I Like To Get

I’m not much of a cook so prepare fruits and veggies as simple and effortless as possible. Make it easy on yourself and let the produce steal the show! Here’s what I buy and how I make them.

Micro Greens: For my Kardashian Salads. You get the exact flavor from their respective full grown vegetables. No chopping necessary.

Eggs: After reading and researching the horrific ways chickens are treated and the scary things that are found in eggs, I’m VERY particular where mine are from. The Farmer’s Market is a great way to find free range eggs that aren’t full of toxins and hormones.

Fresh Flowers: No brainer and way more affordable too!

Sharpen Knives: Did you know you can get your knives sharpened at the farmer’s market? It’s like getting new knives all over again!

Hard To Find Spices: I’ve found some spices here I can’t find anywhere else. Plus when’s the last time you’ve replaced yours?

Heirloom Tomatoes: Sprinkle with salt and that’s all you need! Tip: I always wait for tomato season towards the end of summer. The ones out in the beginning of summer {although extremely tempting} are not as good.

Cherry tomatoes, garlic, basil and onions: For the EASIEST and TASTIEST salad EVER. Chop and add a little of your favorite salad dressing.

Berries: I eat them straight out of the container. Add a dollop of whipped cream for a healthy and delightful treat!

What’s In Season: This is by far the #1 tip. You can’t beat the flavor of in season fruits and veggies. It determines what we buy and make for dinner! For veggies we use as a side dish. We will cut and grill them with olive oil. We put them on salads raw. Cucumbers we will slice and eat with hummus.
