When planning Penelope’s nursery, a neutral palette was a must. If you remember, we didn’t know if we were having a boy or a girl! So it was gray and white all the way.
The previous homeowners had this room set up as a nursery. So before Sean and I even got pregnant, we knew we wanted it to be a nursery someday too. But it started as an office/guest room.
When we took these photos, Penelope was just two weeks old. And boy did I think I was exhausted then. Clearly I had no clue what I was in for! Haha.
A Neutral Nursery Designed To Grow
I love how Penelope’s clothes, blankets and toys make her room more girly. But if you take these things away, you’re left with a neutral canvas. This was strategic so we could make it for a boy or girl by simply accessorizing. It can evolve with our baby’s style as she gets a little opinion of her own!
Versus doing something more permanent, like paint her room pink or wallpaper. Which I LOVE by the way. It’s just SO MUCH WORK to re-do a room. And shoot! I’m lucky if I can get a load of laundry done right now let alone re-wallpaper when she’s five. Since we took these pictures, Penelope’s room has gotten even more feminine. We have dolls, we just put up the SWEETEST mobile and I just ordered a pink “P” pillow to replace the navy “R”! {which is on MAJOR sale right now from $110 to $29!}
Penelope’s Oval Crib
And speaking of things that evolve, her crib grows with her too! When designing any space, I feel like you have to start with a piece you LOVE. For us, it was Stokke’s oval Sleepi Mini Crib that I fell in love with at the Chicago Baby Show. It’s like a little nest for our baby bird!
The best part is it expands with your baby as they grow. After a few months, you can turn it into a full sized crib {which I think we may have to do soon 😭}. Once your little one is ready to transition, remove the side panels and it becomes a toddler bed. One kit, three beds—that’s the beauty of Stokke. They are the masters of minimalist Scandinavian design. {No wonder we’re obsessed with their Tripp Trapp highchair too!}. The crib even comes with lockable wheels so you can move it with you from room to room! And the Pehr sheets are SO soft and obsessed with their neutral prints.
Big Brother, Larry, Update
Once we finished the nursery, Larry {our little pup} knew something was up. Before P’s arrival, we’d catch him sun bathing on the rug or just sniffing around. He’d also curl up on the glider while I’d organize her stuff and put things away.
Now that Penelope’s here, Larry’s been transitioning just like the rest of us. First, he’s marked his territory in her room a few times. Aye yi yi! Nothing like more poop and pee for me to deal with.
He sleeps on the couch downstairs on his own free will. He used to sleep with us in bed every night! But with a crying baby he won’t have anything to do with it. Apparently Larry needs his beauty rest. Haha!
But the best part is he runs to her side every time she cries and gives her lots of kisses! He’s SO gentle with her. And with the weather warming up, me and “P” have been taking him for walks. It’s so nice to include him in an activity we all can do. He’s been a VERY good big brother. Just adjusting just like the rest of us 🙂
