After our daughter, Penelope, came into our lives, I’ve never appreciated a human more in my life than my mom. She’s the definition of selflessness.

I couldn’t accomplish HALF of what I do without her and I hope I’m half the mom to Penelope that she is for me.

But to watch her become a grandmother. Oh man. Talk about humbling. The older I get, the more I realize it’s a privilege to have a close relationship with your parents. My mom especially made so many good memories and traditions for us growing up. Now she’s doing the same for Penelope.

It’s a gift. Which is why today’s story is extra special…

It’s written by my mom, Cindy, herself. You’ll see an heirloom that’s been in the family for years, evolve into a new chapter of life. All thanks to our tried and true, Calico – a company that’s been a staple in our family for as long as I can remember.

BEFORE W/ OTTOMAN

We’ve moved many many times throughout the country during our 37 years of marriage. And THIS chair has always made the move.

She is connected to us like an old friend and makes our new place feel like home. She has spent time in the living room, the family room, the bedroom and even storage twice.

We simply can’t part with her!

It is the memories we’ve spent on her lap. Whether it be story telling with Nicole (AKA Coco) as a toddler, doing homework, watching TV, or an afternoon snooze. Everyone claims it is the most comfortable chair in the house. We even fight over who gets to sit in it!

After our recent move from Madison, Wisconsin to Barrington, Illinois, I noticed our poor comfy chair needed an update. Her skirt was limp, tattered and torn from everyone sitting on her. She deserved a makeover!

So I headed to my “go to” fabric shop CALICO for a fitting! I knew I could rely on their FREE design expertise. Just as I had when they made my window treatments for my living room, kitchen and bathroom too.

It was like going to a bridal shop to find the perfect dress!

The selection at Calico was endless. Nicole and I couldn’t decide where to begin. Christine, the manager, was so helpful. She looked at photos of my precious chair and asked questions about her measurements and the room in which she would be showcased.

I wanted the chair to be stylish. To make a statement when one walks in the room. Her new dress also needed to be durable, stain resistant, easy to clean and odor resistant for my Granddaughter, Penelope – who will be sitting on her lap.

And I couldn’t forget about Rebel, our English Setter, and Nicole’s dog, Larry when he visits. Christine directed me straight to the 1000+ of Performance fabrics! WOW what a selection. We fell in love with the black and whites, especially the Crypton fabric called Panic-Chess!

Don’t tell Penelope I told you, but she had a little accident on the chair the very first day! It cleaned right up with a damp cloth and her Mother never knew! Shhhew!

Next, it was time to talk details. Once I lifted her frumpy skirt and the skirt on her coordinating ottoman I noticed the lovely curves. I decided right then and there she is old enough to show them off! That’s when Christine suggested the black piping made from the Wexford Linen in black. And the crown on top was the little linen lumbar pillow with the Trellis Band! I just knew Calico’s finishing touches would make her unique.

Color, pattern and texture – my chair would have it all!

Sadly, I sent the chair off to the upholsterer even though she would be missed. It was for the best! Two men picked her up from my house and swept her off her feet.

Luckily, the ottoman went with her to keep her company. He was to get the same makeover. The pair are like a marriage as they have always been together. Before I knew it, Calico sent the same two very nice and professional men to escort the pair back into our home. And what a classy look they had! (I think they secretly were showing off!) What a statement they made! The room was dancing all night!

Again, I sit in her lap, but this time, with Penelope on mine and enjoy story time just like back in the day with Coco!

A memorable piece of furniture is like a best friend. When it is in need of repair, CALICO is the answer to your prayers. They make you feel better for generations, not just when it arrives!
