I’m so excited to FINALLY share Penelope’s pink and green bedroom!
I can attest this room was the crown jewel of our home. And I say “was” as we since moved to a new house before revealing it here.
It was soooo good, I almost texted our realtor, “take down the listing!”. But our goal is to re-create it at our new house {which will be a whole other fun journey in itself}. So stay tuned for that.
Now let’s get into all the juicy details shall we?
Cha-Cha-Changes!
This room (which used to be a guest room) transpired thanks to our growing family. Our three year old daughter, Penelope, had some BIG changes ahead of her – a new sister, transitioning from a crib to a bed, plus switching rooms…
So to make these shifts a little easier – a BIG GIRL room was just what the doctor ordered.
I have to say, kids are awesome because they give you permission to GO W-I-L-D.
So when Melissa and I started dreaming up ideas at the Calico Design Studio we WENT. FOR. IT.
Poppy pinks, bright greens and bold prints galore. And I know that’s why it turned out so great…zero holding back.
The Dream Team
If you are new here, Melissa of Melissa Mahoney Design House is a highly sought after Chicagoland interior designer who we’ve been working with for almost three years! She’s known for her electric style, impeccable use of color and exquisite pattern mixing. Her waitlist is close to “forever” however she’s offering a FREE Masterclass this week – How To Conquer Your Furniture Layout – if you want to take her up on it!
Why Calico
I know when designing a room, most people focus on furniture. I know because I used to do it too! But I’m telling you…textiles is where it’s at.

We’ve worked with Calico extensively in every room of our old home and I can’t imagine not having Calico in every room of our new house. You can see previous projects here – breakfast nook, dining room and living room to see what I mean.
They’re our go to for quality window treatments, furniture and wallpaper. They have over sixty design shops all over the country and carry an incredible selection of brands. Since it’s a one stop shop, the process is seamless and we lean on their designers to help us troubleshoot! Yes – even interior designers need help.
If you happen to go to the Oak Brook, IL design studio, we always work with Linda, the manager. She is exceptional and makes this very detailed, in depth process look easy – when in fact it’s not! Also, it’s a new location and stunning. Thank you Linda for EVERYTHING you do.
Calico Window Treatments, Headboard, Bedskirt, Wallpaper + Pillows
The reason I love textiles is they can make a room appear bigger, softer, cozier and ooooz dimension. The folds of window fabrics and upholstery add softness and texture without buying a single new piece of furniture.
For Penelope’s room… the headboard, wallpaper and bold window treatments drew your eye up, creating the illusion of a larger space. You can see what this room looked like before and the transformation is pretty mind blowing. And I’m sorry….a dresser can’t do that!
We also did custom reversible pillows so we could change the look with a flip of a cushion! If you pay attention, we demonstrated every possible combination throughout this post. We did this for our living room – one side winter and another side summer – and it’s such a nice benefit.
Lastly, between the bed and windows, you’ll see several vignettes and moments. For such a compact area, it was spectacular and rivaled the space of a larger bedroom in my opinion.
So here’s exactly what we did. Note ANY of these alone would change up a space!
- Headboard (you can see all styles in store)
- Bedskirt
- Reversible Pillows
- Cornices
- Blackout Drapes
- Wallpaper – Bedroom and Closet
We didn’t know how or where – but it all started with the Scalamandre fabric. And then one thing led to another.
Headboard
We hemmed and hawed on what size and type of bed to get Penelope. A toddler? A single? Low to the ground? A bed disguised as a car or castle? But after talking to several parents, we skipped straight from a crib to a double. And we’re really happy we did.
Since a bed is the focal point of any bedroom, we aimed to make it worth the look. I’ve worked with Calico many a times and had no idea they did custom headboards! There are six main styles you can choose from. Then you customize with different details, finishes and fabrics. The curve and grandness of the Julia style felt very “girly” but the fabric selection made it feel modern. Notice the trim and striped ticking on the sides that match the drapes. Swoon!
Bedskirt
Initially, we planned on an entirely different fabric from the bed frame, but by matching the headboard, it feels like an entire bed frame. She’s a stunner.
Cornices
For a grand statement, we decided the Scalamandre fabric would almost act as art centered over the windows. To truly understand the beauty of Scalamandre, you have to see it in person. The vibrancy, the detail and alllll the colors on one piece of cloth screams luxury. You can’t stop looking at it.
Since everything is custom, Calico offers several cornice styles and the details you can add are endless. To keep things cohesive, we added the same green trim you see on the headboard, bedskirt and some of the pillows. Just another little trick I’ve learned from Melissa to make pattern mixing flow!
Drapes
These drapes draw open and close via a hidden pulley system and it’s as if you’re living in a castle. We also made these black out so sleeping beauty could sleep a little longer. This pink and white striped fabric matches the ticking on the headboard and the green tape outlines the curtains on the bottom, as well as the sides.
Wallpaper
So we used two different wallpapers here and both are by Magnolia Home. One for the room and one for the closet.
Now here’s another little trick I’ve picked up from Melissa when it comes to mixing patterns…
If you hold the two green wallpapers side by side, they’re different shades of greens. I initially ruled it out, but Melissa said since there’s “space” {AKA the closet wall and doors} between the two prints, they’re close enough you can get away with it! And oh so fun it is!
The main wallpaper is the kind of paper that makes you want to wallpaper your entire home. This paper actually comes in MANY colors and the white print has a slight texture to it, making it feel extra lux. We couldn’t stop gushing over how perfect the shade of green was! More on the closet wallpaper below.
Reversible Pillows
After doing custom, reversible pillows in our living room, we did the same for Penelope’s bed. We purposely shot her bed in all the different combinations you could possibly have. We even threw on two different lamp shades to truly do this functionality justice! The benefit of going custom…
Closet
Before baby Chloe’s arrival, we had two closets redone with Inspired Closets! So we took advantage of this opportunity to wallpaper Penelope’s closet before the installation. It was like this secret surprise every time she got dressed. And for the first time ever, I wanted to keep her closet door open!
